Xuanwu lake lies in the central-northeast of Nanjing, near Nanjing railway station and Jiming temple. The Ming city wall borders the park to its south and east and the lake is overlooked by a notable pagoda and the Zifeng Tower.
The history of Xuanwu lake can be traced back to the Pre-Qin period (21st Century BC to 221 BC). The name of the lake has changed several times during its long history. It covers 444 hectares and is 15 kilometres in circumference. According to local legend, a black dragon was seen in the lake and was believed by Chinese Taoists to be a water god called Xuanwu, which gave the lake its name.
There are five isles in the lake: Huan Isle, Ying Isle, Liang Isle, Cui Isle and Ling Isle. From Huan Isle you can see willow leaves waving gently in the wind and feel the breeze from the lake blowing tenderly on your face. Ying Isle is famous for its cherry blossoms. When the cherry blossoms bloom in early spring, the isle seems to be an ocean of flowers. Liang Isle was developed earlier than the other four. Annually, the grand traditional exhibition of chrysanthemums is held there. Cui Isle has dark green pines, emerald green cypresses, tender willows and light green bamboo. To the east of Ling Isle, you can see the beautiful clouds drifting across Zhong mountain.
Each isle has wonderful scenery: Nuona Tower on Huan Isle exudes a special serene ambiance. Wumiao Zha on Ling Isle has a long history and a pleasant design. Other places such as the Lotus Garden on Ying Isle and Hushen Miao on Liang Isle are also worth visiting.
