map magazine -January 2012 lssue 120

Dear friends,

It is exactly 10 years since the first edition of Map was published in 2002. This seedling was planted at just the right time to sprout and grow strong in the fertile soil of Nanjing - thanks to all of you, who were the sunshine and rain that nourished it! A decade is enough for a seedling to grow into a tall tree, as it is for a grape to ferment and create a vintage wine with a heady aroma that is nurtured and perfected over time.

Over the last decade, Map magazine has evolved from a small operation involving a handful of people into a large group employing 50 staff. Its circulation has increased from an initial 10,000 to over 100,000, it has branched out from Nanjing into other cities in Jiangsu, and the original bilingual English-Chinese version has expanded to include Japanese and Korean editions. These 10 years have borne many fruits, but none would have been possible without all of your interest and support - so thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Over the last decade, we have striven not only to make a bilingual magazine, but also to produce a platform for cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world. Initially, every autumn after the magazine was founded, it organised an international exchange event, a large-scale information fair for foreign residents called "New Nanjing, New Life". In 2009, under the stewardship of the provincial government's International Communications Department, the event was upgraded to become the "Nanjing International Cultural Exchange Day", a figurehead of cultural exchange in the city. In addition, the magazine has established a "Chinese Culture Club" for its foreign readers, and organised numerous events covering such themes as Chinese puppetry, Chinese New Year and a cookery school, all to great acclaim. Map has also set up a website (www.myq.com.cn) which offers electronic versions of the magazine.

The Year of the Dragon is upon us, and we will continue to strive. We will strive to make Map an urban culture guide with more languages being circulated via more channels and with editions in more cities; we will strive to make Map an international exchange platform with paper and electronic versions developing side by side; we will strive to make Map into Jiangsu province's biggest platform for bespoke services including internal company publications and direct mail advertising magazines. Enter the dragon; and enter a new chapter in the history of Map!
